Garrett Augustus Morgan: Inventor of the Stop Light & Hero.
The child of freed slaves with a 7th grade level of education, Garrett Augustus Morgan ultimately owned a repair shop, clothing business, and cosmetic product line. In 1916, he and his brother heroically rescued white workers trapped after a tunnel explosion under Lake Erie with the aid of a breathing hood he invented. His health permanently suffered as a result of the rescue. Because he was Black, Morgan was not eligible for a job at that tunnel and was excluded from the medal ceremony honoring rescue workers. He then started The Cleveland Call, a Black newspaper in 1920. Most importantly for humanity, Morgan patented the mechanical traffic light in 1923 and sold it to General Electric. Yes, a fascinating Black dude invented the traffic light. #blackhistory #history #passedasNativeAmericantogetsomeofitdone
